Prior to 1978, seventy-five percent of all houses were painted with lead paint. This paint was used mostly on outdoor surfaces but was also used on window, doors, and wooden surfaces inside. Up until the 1950s, lead paint was commonly used in paining houses. By 1978 the use of lead paint in homes was banned thought the United States. Health concerns had become known and this was the first step taken to reduce the chances of health problems being caused by the lead that was found in paints.

The paint is not likely to peel off and cause problems that way. A home that is well cared for will likely have few problems with the paint except in a few areas. Those places where there is a lot of rubbing are high risk for exposure. This includes windows, doors and stair railings. These high friction areas allow for dust to be produced form the lead paint and it is this dust that can be an issue in the health of both the adults and children in the home. Lead paint in homes is a bigger concern for children'a health. The dust can appear not only on the places that the paint is but it can drop onto the floor, carpeting, furniture or even a child's toys. This then leaves the opportunity for it to get on a child's hands and so in their mouths. Lead paint need not be ingested to be a problem. It can simply be inhaled to have the same affects.

Lead paint in homes is still a concern. If your home is an older one and you think you have reason to believe that there was lead paint used in it there are some things you can do to keep the health risks down. Wash down the window and door frames as well as stair railings once a week. Make sure you wear cleaning gloves and use a good dishwasher detergent when doing the job. Vacuum up any paint chips or paint dust as soon as you see it. Make sure the places your children play, and where they sleep, are kept extra clean. Keep cribs away from window sills so young children will not nibble on them. Wash your child hands often but especially before they eat or go to sleep. This is particularity important if your child sucks their thumb.
